Memorable day for St Peter’s

-

DUNDALK Institute of Technology was the only place to be on Sunday last as the National Master Cross Country Championships took place along with the National Juvenile B and National Juvenile Relay Championships.

It was a memorable day for the athletes in the Blue and Black of St Peters.

The Boys U14 Relay team had a day they won’t forget for a long time. The Cross Country Relay Championships currently only goes up to U14 so the boys knew that it was now or never for this team to win national medals.

In a fiercely contested race each of the four athletes ran their hearts out and claimed a very well deserved national bronze medal. The team consisted of Mark Litchfield, Cian Gorham, Sean Allen and Dean Murtagh.

The busy programme had kicked off with the Juvenile ‘B’ Championships and this to was to me very successful for the St Peters club with two Individual medals.

Oisin Reidy had a fantastic run in the Boys under-11 race to finish in second place and claim his first national silver medal , Oisin’s younger brother Donacha also had a brilliant run out of his age in the same race to finish just outside the individual medals when he finished 14th.

Ruirhi Carpenter finished very strong after being boxed in at the start of the same race. Ben McKeown had a strong run in the Boys U13 which is a year up in age for him, Ben didn’t get off to the best of starts but worked his through the field to finish very strongly.

The last of the boys in action was Rory McLoughlin who had his best run for something and was unlucky not to claim one of the individual medals and hopefully this is the start of what could be a great year for him potentially.

The girls also enjoyed fantastic success when once again Niamh Brady delivered on the big stage when she executed a tactical master class by allowing others to set the pace and then taking the reigns with 500M to go and storming to an emphatic victory a claiming in the National U15 B Championship title, this is even a better achievement as Niamh was running a year out of her age.

The girls U13 Race also had two St Peters Athletes in action and both competed well with Ellie Smyth and Isabeal Fitzpatrick battling well through the large field of Athletes.

The St Peters Club also had Andrew Rogers compete in the National Masters Championship, Andrew ran really well in a massive field and is a great example to all our younger Athletes.

Next up is the Leinster Juvenile indoor Championships which take place in Athlone IT next weekend.
