Brilliant Bush land U-16 county title

-

BUSH Post Primary School won the under 16 Flood Cup final last Thursday against St. Josephs CBS Drogheda, on a scoreline of Bush 3-12 to St. Josephs 1-6.

St. Josephs got on the scoreline first with a well taken point before Bush settled into the game and led from the early stages until the final whistle. Both schools played some excellent football throughout the final. Bush were missing two key players, Enda O’Neill and Cormac Malone through injury but the team rose to the occasion. Also before half time they were dealt another blow when their wing back Gerard Hanlon who was carrying a injury into the

determined to make their mark in storytelling music – at home in Newry, in the market places of Cherbourg and recording studios over the world.

Declan’s magic guitar work and funky rhythms created good vibrations in this special place here in Carlingford. Both of them were matched by an audience that asked for nothing less – and joined heartily in the chorus of the classic Mary. A wonderful performance by two artists at ease with their craft. Brian (Harry) Harrison handled the sound to perfection.

Four young musicians from Music Generation Louth’s Pick Up and Play Programme in Dundalk provided the warm-up act. This was their first time to play in front of a live audience, a full house indeed. And perform they did in some style – and to a rousing reception. Ryan Byrne (Vocals & Ukelele); Aaron Farrell (Drums and Bass); Isabelle Wiseman (Cello & Piano); Kyle McQuillan (Guitar), with the support of co-ordinator, Paul Campbell. Full credit to Music Generation Louth. The future of musical performance in the area is in good hands.

KILWIRRA DAWN MASS

The old graveyard and church ruins at Kilwirra/Cill Mhuire Church and Cemetery is situated at Templetown on the Cooley Peninsula surrounded by farmland nestled in the Cooley Mountains. The name Kilwirra is derived from the Irish ‘Cill Mhuire’ which means Mary ‘s Church. The site is associated with the Knights Templar which was founded in 1118 by Hugh de Payens. The ancient graveyard contains Templar graves with the insignia of the cross and the lamb.

The US Vice President Biden visited the old Kilwirra Cemetery during his visit in June 2016 where his great-great grandfather Owen Finnegan and his family were baptized and where a Finnegan is said to be buried.

Dawn mass is celebrated every Easter in the beautiful setting of the ruins of Kilwirra. game had to retire and was replaced by his Cooley club team mate Daire McDaid who did an excellent job. This showed the talent in dept they have at their disposal in the school .

Throughout the second half Bush kept their lead and controlled the game the whole way through for a very convincing win. There were two further replacements, Dylan Quinn for Thomas McCarragher and Ben Condon for Eddie Kirwan. James McDonnell received the cup as captain of the team.

The panel consisted of 18 Cooley players, 9 from St. Patricks, 2 from Roche and 1

Sometimes its the simple things that make the most memorable family memories, so why not celebrate Easter in a special way this year by attending the Dawn Mass in the beautiful setting of the ruins of Cill Mhuire Church, Templetown, at 6.00am on Sunday April 21?

Wrap up warm and be part of a special annual event on the Peninsula that brings us back to traditions and a scene of tranquility in this busy commercial world we now live in.

SUCCESSFUL DEBUT

St Patrick’s U12 Girls had a very successful first outing with a win in Cluskey Park in Dromiskin against St Joseph’s.

The Joes opened the scoring with a point from play, but our girls soon leveled it also with a point from play. The first half was fairly even with a half time score of St Patrick’s 1-2 St Jospeh’s 0-3. St. Patrick’s settled into themselves much more in the second half and excelled as the team played as a unit and under the stewardship of team captain Maggie Holland we eventually went on to win. The entire team played out of their skins, while Maggie Holland, Hannah Rice, Jennifer Freeman and Leah Dunne were really Young Irelander. COOLEY U12 GIRLS LOSE

The girls played their second league match against the Geraldine’s last night in Haggardstown. It was a tough encounter with end to end scores and chances. Geraldine’s started strong scoring 1-1 before Ciara Boyle and Sarah Duffy responded with a point each. The Gers scored another 1-1 before half time to leave the score 2-3 to 0-2. Cooley had some wides and goal chances but were battling hard throughout the field. Two points from Ellen Callan and Sarah Duffy were matched by another 1-1 from the Geraldine’s. Ellen Callan responded with a great goal to leave it all to play for in the final quarter. Jessica White opened the final quarter with 1-1 to

leave 2 points between the sides. The infamous goal was elusive for Cooley who hit posts and cross bar and with the Gers responding with a final two points Cooley were beaten 3-6 to 2-5 on the night.

The girls showed great improvement on skills and ball work in all positions and were tested throughout the game. Some great moves just didn’t go our way on the night. This was a great team performance. Well done to all
