TV doctor launches Marist 5k

Professor Niall Moyna of ‘Operation Transforma­tion’ and ‘Doctor in the House’ fame, returned to his alma mater recently for the launch of the Marist 5km Run/Walk which takes place on Friday May 3.

The Head of the School of Health and Human Performanc­e at DCU, met with teachers and staff, and was introduced to sixth year student Isreal Olatunde,

Israel has had a very successful indoor season, retaining his National U20 title and setting a new youth national record. He is about to embark on a very demanding outdoor season and is due to participat­e in the Athletics Ireland Junior training camp in Portugal in April before competing in the Leinster Schools Championsh­ips in May.

If everything goes to plan he will compete in the All Ireland Schools finals in Tullamore on June 1. The Marist student will have a break from athletics while he completes his Leaving Certificat­e examinatio­ns in mid June.

He will resume his sprinting programme in Mannheim in Germany on June 29 with the Irish Junior relay team. He will also compete in the individual 100m sprint. July will also be a very busy month for the Dundalk native as he will compete in the National Juvenile Championsh­ips before representi­ng Ireland at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan. All going well Israel will bring his season to an end in early August to begin a well-earned rest before going to university.

For runners with a less demanding schedule, The Marist 5km, promises to be an enjoyable challenge on a pleasant route around town. Over 500 participan­ts took part last year and this year’s event should be similarly popular.

The run will start at 7pm on May 3 and registrati­on is open online at www.register. primeoeven­ts.com or through a link on the school’s Facebook page.

This will be a chipped race. Registrati­on is €20 and students have the opportunit­y to register in school for €10. The race will start and finish in the school grounds on St Mary’s Road.
