ALDI reopened their new look Newry Road store at the Newry Road last Thursday following an extensive renovation project as part of the company’s €160m investment in its Irish store network.

The revamp, which is part of their Project Fresh sees Aldi invest a further €60m in revamping the layout and design of all of its 139 stores nationwide, was given the thumbs up by customers who were pleased to see the store open again after being closed for a week for complete refurbishment.

Aldi’s Project Fresh store layout was recognised at the Checkout National Retail Supplier Awards, by scooping the Best New Store Build award for Aldi’s Ennistymon store, one of Aldi’s first Project Fresh stores.

The store has a new layout, so shoppers are greeted with a wide selection of fresh food at the front of the store, hi-spec fixtures and fittings and new signage that provides a more efficient and hassle-free shopping experience. There are also 109 car parking spaces available for customers.

Store Manager Liam Reichenberg, at Aldi Newry Road said: “The Project Fresh revamp of our store is great news for our customers. Its new spacious design makes for a very easy and enjoyable shop.’

‘Our commitment to our customers is we will never be beaten on price and will always provide the best value. Our Swap and Save campaign continues and the goal of this campaign is to remind shoppers about the saving that can be generated by swapping their weekly shop to Aldi.’

The store will be powered by 100% green electricity. The has invested heavily in improving its energy management systems and its entire store network is now powered by 100% wind generated energy. Aldi was the second retailer in Ireland to achieve ISO 50001 accreditation in recognition of its efforts to improve energy efficiencies.

The Newry Road store participates in Aldi’s national partnership with FoodCloud, donating surplus food to local charities daily.

The store has donated over 29,000 meals to its charity partners to date. Aldi Newry Road is also part of Aldi’s Community Grants network, with Cara Cancer Support Centre just one of several charities availing of the €500 bursary grants this year.

Aldi now has four stores in the county and on Friday announced that they planning to open a new €5m store on Jervis Street, Ardee. The development will support up to 80 jobs during the construction phase, as well as the creation of 20 permanent jobs once the store opens.

The first of the Old Dundalk Society’s series of autumn lectures takes place in the County Museum, Jocelyn Street tomorrow ( Wednesday) at 8pm.

The lecture, Two Places, Miles Apart ( The Origins and Historical Growth of Newry)’ will focus on the historic events and personalities that led to the creation of the Town of Newry. It is over 50 years since the Old Dundalk Society has featured a lecture on the history of Newry, so the lecture will be a most memorable and exciting event.

It will be delivered by Michael McKeown, well-known Newry historian and businessman. Michael has published a number of books of Newry interest, including ‘The Book of Newry’. He has lectured on numerous occasions about the history of Newry and intends to enlighten the Dundalk audience on the origins and growth of ‘ two places, miles apart’.

Attendees are advised to come early as there is limited capacity at the venue. An enjoyable evening is assured. Voluntary contributions at the door.
