LEADING north Louth company ‘Morgan’s Fine Fish’ won a prestigious title at the 2019 Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards in Dingle, Co. Kerry last week

The Omeath based supplier won the Bord Iascaigh Mhara Seafood Innovation Award for Aldi’s Irish Scallops in Shell Wrapped in Pancetta with Whiskey and Garlic Butter.

The Morgan family have been involved in the seafood business since the 1890s and therefore have over 150 years of experience developing a passionate insight for seafood. Generations of family members have passed on an indepth fish catching and processing knowledge so that the Morgan family members continue to use that heritage today.

The company was formally established in 1989 and to facilitate a unique ‘ hand filleting’ fish process, a custom built state-of-the-art plant was built, in the heart of Cooley Peninsula overlooking the stunningly beautiful Carlingford Lough.

The company continues to operate from this site, adding a custom designed smoke house in 2000, so that they could develop a distinctive oak smoked salmon product. Ideally situated equidistant between Dublin and Belfast and within ten minutes of the M1 Motorway, Morgans have built up a network of customers throughout almost every county in Ireland. Within the various Retail & Wholesale sectors Morgans are widely established as experts in quality seafood processing.

Welcoming Morgans award win, Aldi Ireland’s Group Buying Director, John Curtin said: ‘ These awards recognise the outstanding quality of the many Irish food and drink producers that supply our stores.’

‘We are committed to introducing new and exciting Irish sourced products and engaging more and more Irish suppliers. We have invested more than €1,000,000 in our Grow with Aldi supplier development programme since 2018, which has been specifically designed to help small to medium Irish food and drink businesses secure a retail listing with Aldi.”

The largest competition for quality food and drinks in Ireland, the Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards are recognised as an industry gold standard. Judged purely on taste, over 2,500 products in 100 different food and drinks categories are blind tasted by a panel of expert chefs, restaurateurs, academics and journalists to compete for the coveted mark of Irish quality.
