Flying start for rugby club’s squash team
October 1989
DUNDALK Rugby Club’s A team is off to a flying start in the Leinster Squash League.
Runaway winners of Division 6 last season when setting a record by going through the league unbeaten, they take up where the leave off.
After three wins out of three, the team accumulates 58 points out of a possible sixty.
The squad is strengthened by the addition Ken Donald and Paul Murphy. Both players prove their worth.
Ken is handed the no. 1 spot and is involved in two fierce battles.
Against Martin Rogers of UCD he has to fight all the way against an extremely hard-hitting and does very well to win 3-1.
In contrast, at the Curragh, his opponent Mick Dillon produces a string of delicate and closely-played shots that have Ken twisting and turning in all directions.
Nevertheless, he is able to come back to record a great 3-2 victory.
Meanwhile, Ollie McDermott, Paul Murphy and John Hughes each register three wins out of three. Indeed, Pat Reynolds is the only member to drop a match, going down 3-2 to Tony Bergin at the Curragh.
However, the B team, disrupted by injuries, is struggling in Division 6.
Players like Frank Mullen, Hubie Garvey and Gerry Blundell are still getting valuable experience which will hold them in good stead.
Brian McEneaney, with some great performances, is the attacking player, well supported by Jimmy O’Connor.
At the recent AGM, Róisín Finn becomes the first woman to take the chair after being elected for the new campaign.
Other positions filled at the meeting are secretary, Gerry Blundell; treasurer, Marian Mallon; club captain, Frank Mullen; PRO, Pat Reynolds. Committee, Anne McCabe and Brian McEneaney.
