New extension opened at Rampark NS
November 1989
IT is a great day for Rampark National School as a new £200,000 extension is officially opened.
Even with the presence of Minister for Education Mary O’Rourke, Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich, various politicians and department officials, it proves to be a very homely occasion, typical of the spirit that prevails in the school.
The four new classrooms and general purpose room have been sought since 1981, and a great effort results in a £26,000 local contribution being raised.
Cardinal Ó Fiaich emphasises the importance the school and teachers have in the life of the community.
Minister O’Rourke describes the occasion as warm and intimate, and is heartened by the friendly welcome she receives from the children.
She pays tribute to principal Gerry Malone and his teaching staff, and recalls when she took up office two-and-a-half years ago this was one of the first projects which landed before her.
The minister continues the school gets its extension by the efforts of the community through its contribution.
Parish priest Fr Bobby McKenna thanks all who helped make the day possible and pays tribute to his predecessor the late Fr John Keelan for getting the project moving.
He puts on record a great indebtedness to Mr Malone for his dedication.
Gerry Malone thanks the minister and everybody else involved in providing this excellent facility. In going through all who play a part, he says it shows the great community spirit that is behind the school.
Fr Christopher O’Brien, chairman board of management, proves an excellent master of ceremonies. He thanks all the board members who, over the years, work for this day.
The parish choir is in fine voice and the children give a splendid concert.
