Epic League Cup decider goes all the way

November 1989

AN epic League Cup final battle goes all the way to extra-time and penalties before Dundalk see off the Derry City challenge in Oriel Park.

Even allowing for the additional 30 minutes and spot-kicks it’s a longer night than anticipated as the kick-off is delayed.

Six buses of Derry supporters arrive just five minutes before the scheduled start, the same time as a large contingent of local fans.

To compound the situation, glass at either side of the main stand is covered with frost and condensation blocking out certain views of the goals. It is decided to close off both ends of the stand.

There is drama on the field too when Derry’s Paul Doolin is red-carded after just 16 minutes; while ‘ keeper Tim Dalton makes a fine stop from Joey Malone’s first half penalty.

At the other end, Felix Healy, taking advantage of some confusion in defence, gives the Candystripes a 36th minute lead.

Dundalk don’t take long to reply. With half-time approaching Paul Newe crashes home an equaliser following a corner.

Only the brilliance of Alan O’Neill prevents the match from being decided in normal time. He makes a superb last-minute stop to deny Healy.

The teams can’t be separated during extra-time. Dundalk win a penalty shoot-out, Tom McNulty converting the crucial kick.

It’s Dundalk’s second time to take the trophy since manager Turlough O’Connor has been in charge, having reached the final on four occasions during his tenure.

Dundalk: Alan O’Neill, Gino Lawless, Martin Lawlor, Tom McNulty, James Coll, Joey Malone (John Cleary), Larry Wyse, Mick Shelley, Paul Newe, Tony Cousins, Martin Murray.
