Fabulous Frostival parade lights up town centre
There were electric scenes as around 8,000 turned out for the Frostival parade which launched the festive season in Dundalk last weekend
Magical scenes unfolded as the illuminated parade weaved its way from the Long Walk shopping centre though the centre of town, cheered on by thousands of people.
Martin McElligott, Dundalk BIDS Manager said they were ‘really humbled by the huge crowds supporting the event this year.’
‘We estimate there was double the crowds on last year, around 8,000 which was just fantastic,’ said Martin.
The procession saw a winter fairy tale come to life with the Nutcracker prince spinning fire, a flying fairground horse, troupe of Dancing Christmas Stars, the Sugar plum fairy, giant snowflakes, huge golden baubles light up the street, Rudolph prances and dances, a Snowman cycling in a sparkling snowstorm and Santa even made his arrival above the crowd on a magic bicycle!
The weather even provided a brief rain free spell for the crowds to enjoy the spectacle, which included some incredible lighting displays, backed up by the talented performances of local groups including Funky Feet, and even an appearance by businessman Jock McArdle who took to his Christmas themed bike for the parade.
Martin outlined the ‘ huge amount of work’ which had gone into making the parade such a special event this year.
‘We had such amazing support from Louth County
Council, and also from our sponsors, especially our main sponsor, Cuchulainn Credit Union. They are all vital to the success of this event.’
He also paid tribute to the local shops and restaurants which remained opened late on Friday evening, helping to create a Christmas atmosphere for all who turned out for the parade.
And there were events for the whole family throughout the weekend as Santa was in his magical grotto at Market Square for little girls and boys are to visit and to deliver their Christmas letters to him in person.
There was a ‘Little Elves Fun Zone also at Market Square , and the hugely popular festive Frostival Express Train.
