Cooley Uplands project needs to be supported

-

A call for potential supports for the Cooley Uplands project was made at the Dundalk Municipal District meeting.

Cllr. Ruairi Ó Murchú put forward a motion asking for Louth County Council to examine potential supports for the north Louth project.

He told the meeting that the project was currently in need of funding for a major programme of bracken removal, but added that there were a series of initiatives which needed support.

An increase in common grazing areas was also being sought by the group behind the Uplands Project.

Cattle grids installed on mountains could reduce some of the fire risk in these areas, he said.

The project was also hoping to see speed restrictions in a number of areas reduced.

Cllr. Erin McGreehan told the meeting that it was ‘not an issue of Louth County Council not working with the Cooley Uplands project,’ but added that there were a number of initiatives being explored which would need support.

One of the key concerns was bio -diversity protection for the area, amid an increase in bio-diversity tourism.

There was, for example, said Cllr. McGreehan, some heather on the Cooley mountains which is unique to the area.

She added that it was understood this was ‘a really big project,’ which ‘multi-agency and multi-faceted’ saying it would be a very beneficial project for Louth County Council to engage with.

Cllr. Antoin Watters said he would support the project, but added that it was important to liaise with landowners who would be affected by any of the initiatives.

A council spokesperson said: ‘It is understood that the EU funding application for the project was unsuccessful, but Louth County Council officials will meet with the organisers to explore any possible assistance.’
