Ready... steady go for DkIT Goal Mile

- By OLIVIA RYAN

The Goal Mile run on Christmas morning has become a festive tradition for tens of thousands of people across the country.

In Dundalk, the annual event is now in its fourth year, attracting a growing number of walkers and joggers, locals, and people from further afield, hoping to fit in their morning exercise and raise vital funds for charity at the same time.

Organisers confirmed the Goal Mile returns once again this Christmas morning at 10am sharp at Dundalk Institute of Technology’s Sports Pitches.

No training is necessary for the event, where participants can run, jog or walk a mile, raising funds and awareness for GOAL’s programmes in the developing world.

The GOAL Mile has become an integral part of Christmas for thousands of families, and is suitable for all levels of ability, from those who want to push themselves to a fast finish, to others who simply want to enjoy taking part at their own pace, and contribute to a very worthy charity at the same time.

There is no registration required, and anyone planning to take part can turn up at 10am and donate to Goal on the day.

The charity was founded in 1977 by John O’Shea, and throughout the 42 years since its foundation, Goal has responded to almost all of the world’s major humanitarian crises since, working with vulnerable communities in more than 60 countries.

The annual Goal Mile helps to raise funds to ensure the charity can continue with its vital work.

Sarah McEneaney from the organising committee explained that everyone who takes part in the Dundalk event will receive a cherished ‘Goal Mile’ certificate for their achievement.

She called on as many people as possible to turn up on the morning

‘Last year we saw a huge turn out, with many in Santa costumes, Christmas jumpers and hats.!’

She added: ‘It’s a great way to start your Christmas day celebrations before dinner.’
