IFI ‘Youth Diversity’ initiative

-

Over sixty young people from across North Louth and South Armagh gathered with their families for a special celebration to mark the conclusion of a threeyear cross-community cross-border youth diversity programme run jointly by Dundalk Youth Centre and the Tí Chulainn Centre in South Armagh recently

Over 100 young people have participated in the programme since it began in 2016 with funding of over €150,000 from the International Fund for Ireland under its Peace Impact Programme.

The young participants, who came from areas including Aughnagurgan, Newry, Mullaghbawn, Ardee as well as Dundalk, had not previously engaged in community development or peace building activities.

Through the project, they gained new insights and skills in cultural diversity and leadership to enable them to engage positively within their local communities and to act as positive future community leaders.

Speaking at the event, Mr Paddy Harte, Chair of the International Fund for Ireland, said:

‘ Through our Peace Impact Programme, the Fund is committed to delivering real and positive transformation in communities that have not previously or only partially, participated in peace building and reconciliation activities. This programme typifies the positive change we seek to foster and encourage.’

Mr Harte congratulated the young people who successfully completed the programme.

He also commended Dundalk Youth Centre and the Tí Chulainn Centre and everyone involved in the project for their work and commitment.

‘Organisations like yours recognise that we have a special responsibility to make sure the benefits of today’s peace era are secured so that everyone in our society can experience them,’ he said.
