Glenmore youngsters perform well at cross country event
THE 2020 cross country season got off to a sunny but frosty start when athletes from across the county and beyond turned out to compete in the Blackrock AC cross country races held at Geraldines GAA club on Sunday.
A group of 20 athletes made the journey from the Cooley peninsula to compete for Glenmore AC. First to the start line was the u9 boys team of Conor Finnegan, Dylan Murphy, Ethan Nichols and Darragh Ryan.
The boys ran a great race with Ethan taking 3rd place overall and together they took the 2nd team prize. Next up was the u11 girls race which saw a large field of athletes take to the start line.
Zoe White, Holly McCann and Aine Finnegan put in another great run across the 1000m course to take another 2nd team prize. Oisin Gallagher and Callum Murphy both ran well in the boys u11 race with both boys running out of age. Ella Connolly, Sophie Cumiskey, Eimear Finnegan, Aine Gallagher, Emma McCarragher and Jessica White competed in girls u13 race across 1500m. The girls all put in a great race but were unlucky to miss out on a team medal.
Daniel Connolly, Cian McGee and Elliott Nichols also ran well in boys u13 1500m. Sarah Mallon represented the club in u15 2000m and Ava Brady ran a great race, competing out of age in girls u17 2500m. Well done to all athletes who competed.
Congratulations to Glenmore AC senior athlete Donal McMorland on his fantastic achievement in The Art O’Neil Challenge on Friday, 17th January. This is a very unique event and is organised, and solely for the benefit of, Dublin and Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team.
Donal took on the Ultra event, it’s a 53km route that retraces a historic escape from Dublin Castle in January 1592. The route starts from the Castle at midnight and is on road for the first 30km until
Ballynultgh where the athletes then embark on 23km over hills (unguided) to a finish line in Baravore Co Wicklow, Donal placed 4th (05:32:06) in an extremely completive field. Well done Donal.
Glenmore AC are delighted to announce that the annual Kearney and McBride Cups will be returning to a cross country format for 2020 (8km for males/ 4km for females) in the stunning location of Bellurgan Park.
The club invites all abilities to attend this event, with the Kearney Cup being awarded to the best male club team and the McBride Cup being awarded to the best female club team.
There will also be a full juvenile programme (boys and girls Under 9/11/13/15), with the Johnny Mullen Cup being awarded to the best juvenile club. €2 entry on the line in each race.
For seniors there is an early bird offer of €10 per person (up until the end of January, €15 thereafter).
