Grandparent’s Day proves to be a smash hit at St Fursey’s NS

-

SAINT Fursey’s national school hosted their annual ‘Grandparents Day’ on Wednesday last as part of Catholic Schools Week.

The theme for this year was ‘Living in Harmony with God’s Creation’.

The event is staged in recognition of the very important role played by grandparents in today’s society in helping with the upbringing of young boys and girls.

The school have held it for the past number of years, welcoming grandparents into the school. It is an occasion for the young and the old to share their experiences and memories of school days, and doubtless for grandparents generates not a little nostalgia. It is enjoyed by all parties involved, including teachers and staff.

The grandparents get the opportunity to go into the classrooms and meet with the pupils. Their grandchildren are naturally thrilled and proud to have them in the school, and usually provide entertainment.

The programme followed the same format as in other years with the grandparents visiting classrooms where the children proudly displayed their artwork and treated them to specially prepared performances.

The celebration continued with a Mass in the Geraldines function room celebrated by Father Aidan McCann at which there was a congregation of over 300 people

With work and lifestyles changing so much grandparents are very active in rearing and minding young folk in their families, with in a lot of instances both parents required to work, often quite a distance from home.

In some cases pupils might not have grandparents or they live quite far from the school. Pupils can invite along a relative/s in their place in these instances.
