St Peter’s to the ‘four’ in Athlone

ROUND-UP

-

THE Leinster Juvenile Indoor Athletic Championships took place in Athlone IT last weekend.

St Peter’s AC had a very successful Championship bringing home a total of four medals.

The undoubted highlight for the club was the sight of two Athletes on the same podium wearing the blue singlet of St Peter’s.

This for such a small club was an unbelievable achievement. Cian Gorham, who seems to improve with every race, ran the race of his life and away from the rest of the field at the sound of the bell putting four seconds into his opponent’s over the last 200m and storming to an emphatic victory and becoming Leinster U16 Indoor 800m champion with an impressive time of 2.11.95.

St Peter’s had double reason for celebration when the returning from a long injury lay off Mark Litchfield held off the chasing pack and claimed his second Leinster career bronze medal much to his and all the St Peter’s AC people present delight. Rory McLoughlin who like Cian Gorham has really improved in recent months and has really applied himself to training showed once again what he’s capable of had another fine performance in the U17 800m final and although finishing outside the medals he can take great satisfaction from getting a new PB of 2.07.87.

The St Peter’s club also had great reason to celebrate on the first day of the Championship when Dean Murtagh had a great victory in the very first staging of U16 400m at the Leinster Indoor Championships. Dean led from the gun and came home in a very impressive time of 55.88.

Dean can take great satisfaction in knowing he is the first ever winner of this event.

Lucy Brennan, who always seems to perform well on the big day, once again produced the goods when she too bagged herself a bronze medal in the U-15 long jump with a leap of 4.71m.

All four athletes will go forward to the National Championships next month with Dean Murtagh finishing in 4th place in the U16 200m

DUNDALK RFC is inviting all female members, their family and friends to the club’s inaugural Ladies Day Event ‘No High Tackles, Just High Heels’ to celebrate the thriving ladies section in the club and to raise much-needed funds.

The day will also contribute to Dundalk RFC’s fight to

which qualifies him for that event.

Orla McLoughlin performed well in the U-13 60m spring narrowly missing out on a final place.

Isabeal Fitzpatrick had a decent performance in the U15 60m Hurdles as did Ellie Smyth in the U15 High jump.

Niamh Brady having eased through her heat in the U16 800m tackle breast cancer, a cause close to the club’s hearts.

The chosen charity is the National Breast Cancer Research Institute with whom the club forged links through the Caroline Gray Memorial Event last season.

didn’t have it all her own way in the final and unfortunately got boxed in and although she managed eventually to break free from the group and chase down the leaders she unfortunately just missed out on a podium finish.

Dearbhla Allen, Ben McKeown and Harry O’Reilly all put in great effort in their respective 800m

Club veteran thrower Tom McGrane once again set great example to the younger St Peter’s athletes when he traveled to Scotland to compete as a guest at the Scottish Masters Championship.

Tom threw in the over 55 category and claimed top honours with a throw tickets cost €60 which will include: complimentary drinks on arrival to the sound of the Cross Border Orchestra Trio; a 3-course lunch; fashion show and styling event; an auction and raffle. Music by the fabulously talented duo Leah Kirwan and Cian McKeever.
