Triple triumph for Coláiste Rís

-

Coláiste Rís made it a treble when all three of the school’s entries for the Junk Kouture eastern regional final were selected for the Grand Final due to take place on April 30 in the 3 Arena.

The three entries,‘Roaring 2020’ designed by Esme MacDonagh, Ella Wynne and Ciara Lennon, ‘Coco De Eco’ designed by Caragh Duffy and Megan Magennis and ‘It’s a Gamble’ designed by Neil McCarron from Colaiste Ris, now go to compete against 80 creative teams from schools around the country in a bid to be crowned the 10th annual Junk Kouture winner.

Teacher Maurdeen McCaughey said: ‘We are delighted that all the students’ hard work and creativity has been acknowledged with a triple triumph!’ She pointed out that they had hand stitched their elaborate creations rather than gluing the outfits. ‘We definitely moved up a gear this year.’

Neil McCarron’s entry ‘It’s A Gamble’ is inspired by the Spanish designer Loewe. Touched by how GAA star Oisin McConville had spoken about his secret gambling addiction, Neil wanted to bring the topic into the open.

Coco De Eco, modelled by Caragh Duffy for team members Cara Gonnelly and Megan Magennis, shows what haute de coulture fashion of the future might look like, as the Chanel inspired outfit is actually made entirely from recycled materials, ranging from out of date pasta to bottle tops.

Using old curtain materials, discarded trimmings, and unwanted hair extensions, Roaring 20s highlights the anxieties faced by today’s students. The outfit modelled by Esme McDonagh for team members Ella Wynne and Ciara Lennon takes its inspiration from the fashion of a century ago.

In addition to the coveted first place prize, teams will also be competing for €2,000 for their school, and €1,000 cash for their team. Five Regional Winners’ will also be given the opportunity to attend the famous Cannes Film Festival in May and for contestants planning a future in fashion, there is also the chance to win creative scholarships for sole applicants to the Limerick School of Art and Design, and Griffith College Dublin.
