Joes storm to first victory

JOES gained their first win of the season with a ten-point victory over Oliver Plunketts in Group A of the Paddy Sheelan Cup at Darver on Tuesday night.

The Joes had the better of the game from the outset with Conall Smyth, Conall McCaul and Jack Mulligan among the point scorers and the Cluskey Park side claimed their first goal on 24 minutes when McCaul found the net to help his side lead by 1-6 to 0-3 at the break.

Cian Brady, who was the Plunketts leading scorer, opened the second half scoring with a pointed free but McCaul responded as the Joes remained in control.

The Drogheda side never really threatened a comeback and the Joes sealed victory in the dying moments when Oran McParland side stepped his marker to crash the ball to the Plunketts net.

COOLEY Kickhams and Dundalk Gaels played out a draw in their final Paddy Sheelan Group C encounter at Fr McEvoy Park on Tuesday night.

With St Patricks defeating Young Irelands to finish top of the group on the same night, both teams were effectivel­y playing for the runners-up spot and in the end it was a second half goal that helped rescue a draw for the hosts.

The Ramparts side were in good scoring form in the first half and went in at the break with a 0-8 to 0-4 as Gerard McSorley led the way in terms of scoring.

The Kickhams remained in contention throughout the second half and Mee scored the only goal of the game to ensure his side earned a draw.

CLANS got the better of O’Connells by two points in this dead rubber Group D match played in Darver on Wednesday night.

Barry Carr got the first point of the game for the Clans before Paul McKeever replied but a goal from Conor Culligan had the Bellingham side 1-3 to 0-2 ahead after 15 minutes.

Mark McGeown and Gerry Curran kept the Clans in touch but a late Bernard Osbourne point saw The Grove side lead by 1-6 to 0-4 at half time.

After the teams traded scores at the start of the second half, a Clans goal from Alan Lynch left two between the sides before Ray McCabe and John Byrne levelled the game.

Billy Smith and Paul Crewe then hit the target to put the Dundalk men two clear and despite a late rally the O’Connells were unable to claw back the lead and the Clans held out for the win.

ST Patricks finished top of Group C of the Paddy Sheelan Cup after securing their third successive win at home to Young Irelands on Tuesday night.

The hosts got off to the perfect start as Joseph Connor opened the scoring with a goal on six minutes.

However, they were unable to build on that score as the Young Irelands took control of the match and with Peter McStravick and Jordan O’Donoghue in fine scoring form they went in at the break with a 0-8 to 1-4 advantage.

The home side introduced Eoin O’Connor at half time and within four minutes he had the ball in the back of the net to put their side back in front. The Dundalk men continued to battle with further points from McStravick but the Pats effectivel­y sealed the win when Cathal Grogan found the back of the net on 44 minutes and his side held out for victory despite not scoring in the last quarter.

LIAM Cafferty came off the bench to land a late equaliser that ensured Geraldines would finish top of Group A of the Paddy Sheelan Cup ahead of Nh Mairtin on score difference.

However, despite letting the lead slip in the closing stages of this clash at Haggardsto­wn, the draw was enough to also send the Monasterbo­ice side into the knock-out stages.

Jim McEneaney led the way for the Gers in the first half in terms of scoring as his side went in at the break with a 0-5 to 0-2 advantage, as Conor Whelan was among the scores for the visitors.

Eight minutes into the second half Thomas Clarke scored the only goal of the game to put the Martins right back in contention. The Jocks looked to be heading for victory entering the closing stages with the help of a Val Leddy point only for substitute Cafferty to have the final say and secure a share of the spoils.
