CLUB Captain Justin Byrne will now host his Drive-in on Sunday March 15th at 9.15am, immediatel­y followed by a shotgun start 18-hole scramble.

Teams for the Scramble will be drawn this Wednesday night, so if you are not already on the sheet get your name in quickly before the house full sign is posted.

The novel 12-hole Green Tee Singles Stableford weekend competitio­n was a well-attended and well contested affair that needed a countback to separate the top two finishers.

With the new Hole Index in operation for the first time and players using their full club handicap.

There were prizes for the top 2 finishers Overall and also for the top two point scorers over holes 1-3, 4-6, 7-9 &10 -12.

Two players returned 31 points for the 12 holes but the countback winner was Colin McParland (10) who edged out Graham Johnston (25) after both had finished a point ahead of Shane McNamee (18), Brendan O Rourke (23) and James Maguire (15).

Holes 1-3: Neil Smyth 10 pts won from Colum Quinn who beat Benny Tierney and Martin Fearon on the countback all with 9 points. Holes 4-6: 9 points was good enough to see James Coburn win from Garreth Fitzpatric­k on the countback. Holes 7-9: David Rafferty won with 9 points one better than runner-up Seamus McCoy who topped the countback ahead of Peter Byrne and Shane McNamee. Holes 10-12: a pair of eagles at the across the lake eleventh hole helped James Maguire 11 pts and Brendan O Rourke 10 pts get their rewards by taking the top two places.

The March Monthly Medal will be the first Avada Environmen­tal Golfer of the Year Competitio­n on March 22nd, with the Digney Grant Sponsored Major taking place the last weekend of this nonth.

A reminder to all members that the new Hole Index are now in operation, but more importantl­y be aware that the SSS for the course is now 69 off the White Markers and 67 off the Green Markers.

After four rounds of the Seniors Spring League Seamus McCoy leads the way from Brendan Hughes with John Joe Hazzard back in third spot.

A win on Thursday morning for Raymond Kelly has moved him into contention along with runner-up Frank Ryan with 2 rounds of fixtures remaining.

DUNDALK

NIALL Sloane produced a superb score of 45 points to win the first 18-hole competitio­n of the year at Dundalk on Sunday.

Playing off 31, he put together a round he will remember for a long time as he scored on every hole, with 11 three-point holes, five two-pointers and two one-pointers.

Sloane went out in 22 points as he made his shots count on the second, third, seventh, eighth and ninth holes to claim three points on each.

On the back nine there were three-point returns on the 11th and 12th before he finished with four successive three-point holes from the 15th.

That left him on 45 points, three clear of his nearest rival Pearse Murphy (18) who had 43 after being deducted for previous winter success and had to settle for taking the Category 3 prize ahead of John Farrell who found himself in the prizes for the second successive week.

A countback was needed to decide Category 1, with Seamus Bailey (12) just edging out Brendan Keane (11) after both had come home in 41 pointts.

Conor McClenegha­n (14) showed he is getting to grips with his new handicap after seeing it tumble last year and he was the winner of Category 2 with 41 points, just edging out John Casey McKeever (14).

Connor McCaughey (5) recorded the day’s best gross score with 34pts.

Congratula­tions to Caolan Rafferty on his selection on the internatio­nal team for the Arnold Palmer Cup which will take place at Lahinch Golf Club from July 3rd to 5th.

Friday March 27th is a date for the diary as the Cork-based family trio Greenshine will be performing for the first time in Dundalk Golf Club.

Featuring Noel Shine, Mary Greene and their daughter Ellie, Greenshine’s material straddles the boundaries of contempora­ry, folk and roots.

The show will start at 8.30pm and the restaurant will be taking last orders at 7.30pm.

Tickets are priced at €15 and are on sale from the bar, restaurant and the office.

THERE were wintry conditions for the competitio­n at the weekend, but that did not stop Pat McDonnell topping the field with 31 points. George Farrelly was second with 28 and Rory Lennon third with 26 points.

It was great to see so many of our seniors out golfing for their 10-hole competitio­n on Tuesday last in glorious weather. Thanks to our hard-working ground-staff and band of volunteers who have done fantastic work, the course was dry underfoot and in great condition.

Captain Philip Hughes and Lady Captain Marie Sweeney hope that all our members and friends will play in their Captains’ Drive-in next weekend. Our 2020 Captains Drive-in competitio­n is a four-person scramble with a twist. The draw will be made for teams later this week and you can book by calling the pro shop at 042-9663308. A discount is offered to members who wish to play both days.

Just a reminder that our Captains will be arriving to the clubhouse a little earlier this year. Their ETA is 11.30am on Sunday, depending on traffic of course!

There will be a St Patrick Day Open at Mannan Castle this St Patrick’s Day. Join us for a three-person open (any combinatio­n), with two scores to count. IT was great to see the rain and wintry weather finally ease off and we had a decent turnout for the weekly competitio­n, with 21 ladies playing.

The course was in superb condition and the greens were a little faster than usual for this time of year, but that obviously suited Rita O’Loughlin and Angela Gartlan who won their respective categories.

A huge thanks to our greensstaf­f and the band of member volunteers who have done terrific work on the course over the winter months. Just a reminder to all our members please - repair your pitch marks on the greens.
