DUNDALK Salmon Anglers’ Association reaches a milestone with the official opening of new facilities provided at a cost of €180,000.
Among them are three fishing stands which will allow disabled or handicapped enthusiasts enjoy their favourite sport in comfort and safety.
The association came together with the aim of developing the lower stretches of the River Fane as a salmon and sea trout hatchery.
It controls about five miles of river, most of it on both banks.
The new facilities, on land leased to the association by Dundalk Town Council, represent a tremendous achievement. They also include a members’ car park, a new road to the hatchery and river walkway.
Louth ‘Safe Cycling’ rider Roger Aiken clinches the first stage of the FBD Rás as it passes through Drogheda, Ardee and Dundalk.
The Banbridge man forms a breakaway group of four before winning a sprint finish at Emyvale to conclude a 136km stage.
However, it’s second-placed Morten Hegreburg (Norway) who dons the yellow jersey having picked up points in two bonus sprints.
Aiken takes the green jersey and helps Louth to first in the Team Classification.
A serious ankle injury to Alan Doherty results in a Division 1A match between his team St. Mary’s and Newtown Blues being abandoned after just 10 minutes.
He is taken to hospital by ambulance, and it appears he suffers ligament damage. It is initially thought that the forward breaks his ankle.
Doherty will be a massive loss to the Ardee club which is due to start the senior championship against St. Bride’s. Also in a tough Group C are St. Patrick’s and Cooley Kickhams.
Playing at home, Blues are leading 0-4 to 0-0 at the time of the injury, and referee Joey Moynagh eventually restarts the game despite St. Mary’s players being in the dressingroom having opted not to continue.
