Dundalk City take spoils against DCU

-

FROM THE ARCHIVES: 15 YEARS AGO...

A goal in each half steers Dundalk City to victory in the DWSL Premier League against newly-promoted Dublin City University.

Playing into a stiff breeze in Glasnevin the visitors get a breakthrough in the 40th minute when Tara Nevin wins a tremendous tackle in midfield to set up Sonia Hoey whose left-footed strike from the left of the penalty area sails into the top corner.

Hoey earns a penalty in the 79th minute but her spot-kick is straight at the DCU ‘keeper.

Nevertheless, a second goal does arrive three minutes from time.

Claire Mulholland curls a 25yard free-kick around the wall and into the net.

Karl Dolan is edged out by Paul Brady (Emyvale) in the final uphill sprint of the John Haldane Memorial, but the result is enough for Karl to join Ireland’s elite first category cyclists, the first from the Cúchulainn club to do so in more than 20 years.

Newry Wheelers promote the event which takes place around the Mourne Mountains over five laps.

Eighty-seven riders sign on for the 100km handicap.

A group of 12, including Dolan, breaks away just after the halfway mark, quickly establishing an advantage of over two minutes.

In the end, Brady pips the Cúchulainn cyclist.

Killinbeg qualifies for the semi-finals of the North Leinster Mixed with a magnificent win over Seapoint, conquerors of the defending champions.

Playing away from home, Killinbeg find themselves down at the midpoint of each of the first three matches.

Seapoint then take a 2-0 lead at the expense of Brian McGuinness and Bernie Murtagh, and Dickie Newell and Beatrice

Prenty.

However, Michael Grant and Theresa Giff battle back to win on the 18th.

John McLoughlin and Kitty Sharkey are always in control, prevailing 3 & 2.

The final pairing of Jason McGee and Noleen Gernon takes the first five holes, only for Seapoint to square the match on the 18th.

Nevertheless, they show steely determination to clinch overall victory at the extra hole.
