Gardai appeal for witnesses to fatal collision on M1

GARDAÍ in Dundalk are appealing for any witnesses to a fatal road accident on the M1 yesterday (Monday) morning to come forward.

The collision, involving a lorry and a car occurred at approximat­ely 5am on, Monday 22nd June, 2020 on the M1 southbound between Junction 17 and Junction 16 Dundalk, on the stretch of road between the Castleblay­ney exit, and the DkIT exit.

The car driver (early 30s) was fatally injured during the collision. His body was removed from the scene to the mortuary in Dundalk. The lorry driver, who is in his early 40s was uninjured and was arrested at the scene. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Dundalk Garda Station.

The scene was preserved and the services of Forensic Collision Investigat­ors were requested.

The section of the M1 between the two junctions was closed as inspection­s were carried out, and diversions were put in place.

Extensive tail backs were reported through the town centre and Inner Relief Road on Monday morning, until the M1 reopened.

Gardaí in Dundalk are appealing for any witnesses to the tragic incident to come forward and for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the M1 at the time of the collision or prior to it, to make this footage available to them.
