DAVID ON TRACK TO RUN 1000K

- By OLIVIA RYAN

DUNDALK man David McGee is on target to complete 1000 kilometres running and walking 30k every day until the end of the month.

‘It’s been really tough, but I’m getting there, I have 726 kilometres done as of today (Monday), with eight and a half days left to go.’

David has taken on the mammoth trek to raise funds for Pieta House, and although he set out to raise just €500, he has been overwhelmed by the level of support.

‘ There has been nearly €4000 donated so far, which is incredible,’ he added.

David’s own experiences over the last few months have been, he says, what spurred him on to raise funds for the mental health charity.

‘I was made redundant, and I also lost my grandmother to Covid, so it has been difficult. I wanted to do something for mental health, and this was a way for me to focus on something too since the start of June.’

He explained that the company he previously worked for were one of the first to have people working from home.

‘So I was about two weeks ahead of everyone else in terms of the lockdown.’

Deciding to do 30k every day for a month has proved difficult, but cathartic, says David.

‘I had to give up the running as I tore my hamstring, and had a lot of problems there, so I am walking the rest of it.’

‘Physically I don’t think my body has ever been through something like this. The amount of stretching, eating and rehydration, recovery is far more than I ever expected. Major shout out to a few physios who have helped me get to this point. Mentally I am loving every second of this.’
