A 20-year-old man who is presently serving sentences totalling four-and-a-half years for robbery offences committed when a juvenile, has appeared before the district court.

He pleaded guilty to charges of obstruction of a garda and trespass arising out of three separate incidents.

The court heard further charges of assault and criminal damage were being withdrawn, as the victim, the defendant’s mother, did not wish to proceed with the case.

Sgt Noel Mohan presented evidence that on 14 February, 2018, while being searched under the Mis-use of Drugs Act, the then juvenile attempted to flee.

On 9 June, 2018, he trespassed at a house in Clontigora Court; while on 27 March, 2019, the defendant obstructed a garda from effecting an arrest. He tried to escape on foot.

He has no previous convictions as an adult.

Solicitor Eleanor Kelly added her client is doing ‘extremely well’ in custody since starting a sentence totalling fourand-a-half years last month.

He is clear from drugs, and off cigarettes.

Judge McKiernan imposed a twomonth sentence on one of the charges, taking the others into consideration.

Legal aid was granted.

COUNCILLOR Erin McGreehan has called for the next Government to announce at least one but ideally two more Bank Holidays before the end of the year as soon as possible.

Cllr McGreehan feels that it would boost the ‘ tourist industry and boost local economies, an increased number of bank holidays can generate economic activity and jobs’.

It is also true that Ireland has a lesser number of public holidays than most of our European Union counterparts so possibly this could be more than just a once off.

The North Louth Councillor believes that ‘we must be innovative to think differently and by having an extra bank holiday you are giving people an opportunity to go away for the weekend, the boost of that to our local economy would be fantastic. We have missed out on three bank holidays this year due to Covid Lockdown. It would give us extra time to get out to our cafes and restaurants, shop in our local shops and enjoy our beautiful Island’.
