Plans to re-open our Churches in Carlingford/Omeath

A programme of weekly cleaning and sanitizing has been put in place for both Churches in Carlingford/ Omeath Parish. Special thanks to all those who have volunteered. We are appealing for volunteers to help marshal when both churches open in the parish for Sunday Mass. If you are available to help in Carlingford please contact John McKevitt: 087 2499103, Omeath Tracy Sharkey: 087 8289984. The help of our community is greatly needed and much appreciated.

We will publish in next week’s bulletin more details regarding limited seating for both Churches.

Rampark NS Graduation Class of 2020 want to show their support for the brave firefighters and others who tirelessly fought the fires that raged across our community a few short weeks ago. The fires raged for days, and we looked on helplessly - grateful for the bravery of the men and women who battled to keep us, our homes and our community safe. We owe them. Our community owes them. We want to give back something.

On Sunday next, June 28 at 3pm, two small, socially-distanced groups will walk from Rockmarshall and Piedmont, along the main road to Rampark. We will walk in the shadow of the recent mountain fires, and every glance towards the mountain will remind us why we walk - to raise funds that will ensure the firefighters have all they need to sustain them in similar battles again.

We want to let them know how much we appreciate their bravery - to thank them for looking after our community, our neighbours, our friends who feared the worst on those dreadful days and nights when our beautiful forest and mountain was engulfed by fire. Please support us, as we try to support them, and donate what you can.

John and Dan McKevitt are going to cycle, in the company of some friends, the length of the country from Mizen Head in Cork, the most southerly point, to Malin head in Donegal, the most northerly point.

The idea was first mooted three years ago as a fundraiser for the Foy Centre in Carlingford, Co. Louth. The boys hoped to complete it in the autumn of that year. Unfortunately for a number of reasons the cycle didn’t happen.

The idea has now been resurrected and John and Dan will undertake the cycle starting 10th August 2020.

Why now? The Foy Centre is a local community centre run entirely by volunteers. The centre provides a number of facilities to local groups including Soccer, Gaelic and The Carlingford Knights Rugby teams, Gymnastics, Indoor Football and Basketball as well as a meeting place for local groups. The building is also home to Gavin and Nichola Ring’s Singing Academy, Fitness with Marie, Little People Pre-school and The Orchard Bakery. The main source of income for the Centre is rent from those businesses and funds raised from plays produced by the local drama group.

Due to the recent Covid-19 outbreak, the Foy Centre has found itself with a massive financial shortfall. Obviously the tenants have not been able to operate and consequently there has been no rental income. The local drama group were in the process of putting on a production and that also had to be cancelled. The committee now find themselves in a position where they urgently need funds and it will not be possible to re-open unless some funds can be raised to meet essential bills like electricity, insurance and heating.

John and Dan were to be accompanied on the original cycle by their neighbour and friend Brian Conlon. Unfortunately, as most people know, Brian was taken from us far too soon by cancer. In memory of Brian, the boys want to share any funds raised with The Irish Cancer Society and The Marie Gorretti foundation.

John and Dan want to thank you in advance for your much needed support.

The St. Patricks GFC Lotto resumed at the Clubrooms at Lordship on Thursday evening last, June 11.

There was a jackpot of €11,600 to be won but the winning numbers were not
