Competitor­s brave the heat for triathlon

SOME 175 competitor­s brave sweltering heat in the Blackrock Triathlon.

The big entry exceeds the expectatio­ns of organisers Kenny Dorian and Johnny McCabe who are also delighted at the number of spectators.

The event consists of a 550m swim, 18km cycle and 6km run.

Many are taking part in their first triathlon, and Kenny points out Blackrock is ideal for beginners because the low tide means the swim isn’t too difficult.

This year the organisers take out a one-day licence with Triathlon Ireland which means each participan­t wears an electronic clip to give them live split times for each of the discipline­s.

Bellurgan United gets the chance to show off its excellent facilities to a wider audience when hosting a junior internatio­nal between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Dundalk referee Colin Halligan takes charge of a match which finishes 1-0 to the Republic of Ireland, and Blackrock’s Dennis Dullaghan is one of his linesmen.

Louth hurlers start the Nicky Rackard Cup in style with a resounding 3-19 to 0-15 win over Leitrim in Drogheda.

The hosts open a 0-6 to 0-1

lead inside fifteen minutes before Leitrim’s Clement Cunniffe accounts for the next six points.

Louth midfielder Donnach Callan is the first of three players to be sent off, and at break it’s the Reds in front by 1-8 to 0-9.

They go on to dominate a second half during which Niall Byrne and David Poinard are also red-carded.
