CHERISHED MEMORIES

-

THIS picture of the Quay Celtic team was taken in July, 1992 and shows the team that clinched the Clancy Cup in the Dundalk Summer League.

It was a memorable occasion for the club, for it was their third appearance in the final, but the first time to lift the trophy that had a special association with their club as it was named after one of the founder members, and indeed “Mr. Quay Celtic” himself, Jimmy Clancy.

The picture (back row, left to right) Matt McArdle, Anthony Johnstone, Andrew O’Carroll, Sean Dixon, Mickey Coburn, Tony O’Hare, Kenneth Kearns. Front Row, Damien Savage, Barry Savage, Paul O’Connell, Ian Callan, Thomas Mulligan, Willie Crawley. The mascot is Arron Mulligan.

In the final played against Pearse Celtic, the teams finished 1-1 after extra time, but Quay lifted the trophy that they cherished for so long on penalties, 6-5.

The Pearse team that day had a number of well known faces in their line-up including former Dundalk player, Barry Kehoe, Brendan O’Callaghan and Thomas Staunton.

In the first half that Pearse dominated, Quay struggled especially after they lost their influential centre-half, Mickey Coburn and it was no surprise when they went a goal down when Gavin Greene scored.

In the second half, Quay inspired by one of their own, and another former Dundalk player, Willie Crawley took control and while their equaliser came from a disputed penalty, won by Crawley and converted by Tony O’Hare was fully deserved.

When extra time couldn’t decide the issue, Damien Savage struck the all important penalty in the shoot-out to decide the issue.

The Pearse side was: Fergal O’Hare, Alan Clarke, Bernie Savage, Thomas Staunton, Sean Cunningham, Gavin Greene, Barry Kehoe, Davy Flynn, Peter Coleman, Brendan O’Callaghan, Ciaran O’Connor. Sub. Hugh Murphy.
