-

A man who was tragically killed in a collision between a lorry and a car on the M1 outside Dundalk last week was named as Ciaran McShane (33) from Kilrea, County Derry.

The incident occurred between junctions 16 (Castleblayney exit) and Junction 17 (DkIT exit) at around 5.00am on Monday, 22nd June.

The Derry native died after the car he was travelling in collided with a lorry on the southbound lane of the motorway.

The drive of the lorry, a male in his early 40s, was uninjured in the collision but was arrested at the scene.

He was later released without charge, but it is understood that a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The road remained closed for some time following the tragic accident.

Gardaí are continuing to investigate the road traffic collision.

They have appealed for any witnesses to the collision or who have dash cam footage to contact them at Dundalk Garda Station on 042 9335577.

The family of the deceased were ‘devastated’ at the loss of the married father of two, who was said to have ‘ lived for his family.’

Mr McShane, who worked as a plumber, was on his way to work in Dublin when the tragedy happened.
