VIRTUAL FIREWALK IN SHADOW OF RAVAGED LANDS
ON Sunday last, in challenging conditions of rain and wind, a group of 19 children who earlier this month graduated from 6th class in Rampark NS completed their ‘virtual firewalk.’
The event was a fund-raising walk from Rockmarshall and Piedmont, in the shadows of the forest and mountain ravaged by the ferocious fires which burned across the Pe ninsula only a few short weeks ago.
The class would like to thank everyone who donated on their gofundme.com page, and they would also like to re-state their thanks to everyone who was involved in battling the fires, and keeping the community safe.
Louth firefighters battled, sometimes through the night, to bring some of the blazes under control.
The local fire crews, some of whom attended the virtual walk on Sunday last to support the children said they are ‘very appreciative’ of the support and kindness shown to them by many local residents during the time the fires were burning fiercely, and that the many items of food and refreshments that were given to them were greatly appreciated.
The funds raised by the children will go towards providing some equipment that will benefit fire crews across the region, and Rampark NS are also investigating opportunities with Coillte to assist in the replanting and redevelopment of the local forest area.
A spokeswoman for Rampark NS said ‘We are very proud of the efforts of the children, and wish them well as they start their new adventures at secondary school later in the year.’
