HOT favourites Cooley Kickhams qualify for a place in the senior football championship quarter-finals after beating St Mary’s 1-10 to 0-6.

A superbly-worked goal finished by Darren White in the 40th minute swings the game in their favour.

The absence of Alan Doherty and Niall Sharkey clearly takes a toll on St Mary’s who rely on Darren Clarke for all of their six points.

A low-scoring first half finishes level at 0-3 apiece.

The goal arrives when a free for the Ardee team drops short to Johnny Clerkin. He plays a wonderful crossfield pass to Darren White on halfway.

He turns and, following a one-two with John Kane, bursts through the centre to calmly convert past Peter Duffy.

Elsewhere, there are wins for Newtown Blues, Mattock Rangers, St Patrick’s and Oliver Plunkett’s, while Roche Emmets draw with Naomh Mairtín.

Dundealgan AC hosts its annual road races in Seatown. Spectators are treated to a great night’s entertainment.

David Carrie (Dunleer AC) wins the senior race which is also designated as the County Louth 2005 5km Road Championship.

He leads home clubmate Mark Hoey and Derek Winters (Drogheda & District AC).

Another Dunleer athlete, Fiona Roche crosses the line first in the ladies’ race and helps her team to victory in the Joe Harkin Memorial Trophy.

North East Runners, led by Jim Gonnelly, win the Tom McDonough Cup.

There are also races in the masters, juniors and juvenile categories.

In golf, Denis Cunningham’s consistent form over several weeks is rewarded in the latest centenary gold medal competition at Dundalk.

He wins in a bunch finish thanks to a great back nine highlighted by a string of birdies. Several players finish on 70.

1st Denis Cunningham (11) 70/30, 2nd Oliver Morton (10) 70/32, 3rd Brian Mernagh (9) 70/33. Gross, Peter Rogers (2) 75.
