One of life’s good guys Dominic enjoyed sporting success in his younger days

Dominic McNally, of 65 Meadow Grove, Dundalk, who died on 17 April 2020 in Dealgan Nursing home, was a devoted husband, father and grandfathe­r.

Originally from Toberona, he was one of six sons of his parents Bernard and Elizabeth McNally, who predecease­d him.

He was also predecease­d by his brothers, Thomas, Edward, Gerard and Patrick; his son, Paul and daughter-in-law, Brenda Maguire.

Dominic attended De La Salle National School, Castletown where his interest and skill in sport was developed and encouraged.

He continued these interests throughout his life. He joined Roche Emmets GFC, Greenfield FC and various other clubs, winning numerous medals along the way.

Later in life he became a keen runner, and ran as part of the Harp Lager Brewery team. He also won three All-Ireland medals for cross-country, and got great enjoyment from following horse racing.

In the early 60’s Dominic met and married Angela Reilly and had six children, Dermot, Paul, Audrey, Vivienne, Keith and David.

During his life Dominic worked in various jobs, in particular the building trade, Quelac factory and Harp Lager Brewery.

He was regarded as a reliable and conscienti­ous worker, and popular with his colleagues. He was a lively and friendly character and always up for a joke.

He was known as one of ‘ life’s good guys’. He was a caring, loving father and a huge support to all his family and would lend a hand whenever needed to anyone.

A much-loved neighbour in

Meadow Grove where he lived for over 40 years, the then enthusiast­ic young lads always called to Dominic for soccer games on the green which he greatly enjoyed.

In retirement he remained an energetic man; he kept himself busy maintainin­g his home and garden and helping out with his grandchild­ren whom he loved dearly.

He also took advantage of this time to broaden his horizons by visiting his, son Dermot in San Francisco on a number of occasions, and one of the highlights was a trip to Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

To his family’s great sorrow Dominic developed Alzheimer’s Disease in his later years and became dependent on others to care for him.

He received great care, love and support from Olive and her team in

The Birches, Pat Cooney, his carer from the HSE and the team from Comfort Keepers.

Dominic spent the last two years of his life in Dealgan Nursing Home where he passed away.

Dominic is survived by his wife, Angela; sons, Dermot, Keith and David; daughters, Audrey and Vivienne; grandchild­ren, Aoife, Niamh, Emily, Mathew, James, Keelan; brother, Joe and daughters-in-law, Brenda and Sinéad; his sons’ partners, Tania and Sandra; brother-in-law, Patrick (Tubby) Corrway and sister-in-law, Helen Corrway; nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Fr Derek Flynn from the Redemptori­st celebrated a dignified and moving burial service under the very difficult COVID-19 restrictio­ns.
