NEW MEMBERS FOR MIZEN TO MALIN EVENT

-

Carlingford’s John and Dan McKevitt are going to cycle the length of the country from Mizen Head in Cork, the most southerly point, to Malin head in Donegal, the most northerly point. Other confirmed team members are John Doyle, Omeath, David Brennan, Carlingford, and Eamon Southwell, Newry.

The idea was first mooted three years ago as a fundraiser for the Foy Centre in Carlingford, Co. Louth. The boys hoped to complete it in the autumn of that year. Unfortunately for a number of reasons the cycle didn’t happen.

The idea has now been resurrected and John, Dan and the team will undertake the cycle starting 10th August 2020.

Why now? The Foy Centre is a local community centre run entirely by volunteers. The centre provides a number of facilities to local groups including Soccer, Gaelic and The Carlingford Knights Rugby teams, Gymnastics, Indoor Football and Basketball as well as a meeting place for local groups. The building is also home to Gavin and Nichola Ring’s Singing Academy, Fitness with Marie, Little People Pre-school and The Orchard Bakery. The main source of income

The re-opening of Churches for public worship in Carlingford/Omeath parish is In keeping with Government guidelines and the Framework Document issued by the Irish Bishops’ Conference and the following applies in both churches.

The dispensation from attending Sunday Mass remains in place and those with underlying health conditions should not present at the church.

Hand sanitisers are at the entrance of both churches and parishioners are asked to sanitise their hands before entering the church.

In order that the appropriate social distancing (currently 2 meters, in all directions) can be observed, the number of parishioners admitted to the church will be restricted as follows; St. Michael’s, Carlingford: 2 parishioners or a family per seat clearly marked (please sit here). St. Laurence’s, Omeath: 3 parishioners or a family per seat clearly marked (please sit here). Both churches have a one-way system for entry and exit.

There is a one-way system, on a for the Centre is rent from those businesses and funds raised from plays produced by the local drama group.

Due to the recent Covid-19 outbreak, the Foy Centre has found itself with a massive financial shortfall. Obviously the tenants have not been able to operate and consequently there has been no rental income. The local drama group were in the process of putting on a production and that also had to be cancelled. The committee now find themselves in a position where they urgently need funds and it will not be possible to re-open unless some funds can be raised to meet essential bills like electricity, insurance and heating.

John & Dan were to be accompanied on the original cycle by their neighbour and friend Brian Conlon. Unfortunately, as most people know, Brian was taken from us far too soon by cancer. In memory of Brian, the boys want to share any funds raised with The Irish Cancer Society and The Marie Gorretti foundation.

John, Dan and the team members want to thank you in advance for your much needed support. row by row basis, for receiving Holy Communion. Priests and Ministers of the Eucharist will wear a face-covering while distributing Communion. As in the period before the cancellation of public Masses, Holy Communion may be received by the hand only. The envelope collection is a fixed point at the exit in both churches.

Every care will be taken to ensure the safety of our parishioners and we would ask for your cooperation in this.

The Club Lotto is not only a vital source of income for the Club but it will be our only source of income. While many of our running costs have reduced, we still have ongoing expenses to pay such as our mortgage, insurance etc.

The lotto envelopes are now available in local establishments, Barry’s Shop and Murphy’s Garage at Bush. We would like to encourage as many people as possible to sign up to play our lotto draw online. This will help us to considerably reduce the handling of paper tickets and cash by our lotto sellers and buyers.

These include sanitising hands on entering and leaving the Churches, sitting only where welcome cards are placed, taking directions from the ushers and wearing a mask while in Church.

As spaces are limited, Fr. Malachy asked people to feel free to continue watching Mass on the parish webcam. and he also thanked the ushers and cleaners who so generously give of their time.
