Three cheers for ex-principal Padraig

-

IN scenes reminiscent of the film ‘Dead Poets Society’, students and teachers applauded former principal Padraig Hamill as he toured Coláiste Rís for a final time before the midterm break.

COVID-19 restrictions meant that the school community had to bade farewell to the popular principal in a different manner than usual but there was no doubting the level of affection in which he is held by staff and students alike as he walked through the school corridors.

Padraig had stepped down from the role of principal last year, after more than four decades in the school.

A past-pupil of the school, he taught science, physics and maths for 28 years, before taking over the role of principal from Kevin Wynne in 2010.

He oversaw a number of major developments at the school, including the opening of Áras Ui Chuanaigh, comprising two classrooms, canteen and a new study hall, which was named in honour of the school’s first lay principal, Prionsias O Cuanaigh. He had the honour of welcoming President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabrina to the school as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations.

Having started the tradition of giving ‘ three cheers’ whenever there was an occasion to celebrate, it was only fitting he was the subject of rousing ‘Hip hip hoorays’ before going into the school garden, where a tree was planted in recognition of the ‘ hardwork and service and dedication which he gave to the school.’ He was also presented with a special Coláiste Rís GAA jersey.

‘I am absolutely bowled over, totally moved,’ he said. ‘ The single most important thing about Coláiste Rís for me are the people, our staff and our students. I can honestly say today is one of the most brilliant days of my life. I couldn’t ask for better. I am really thrilled with the warmth of your welcome.’
