Joe Biden extended MOU invite

PRESIDENT- ELECT INVITED TO VISIT

- By OLIVIA RYAN

US President-Elect Joe Biden has been extended a special invitation by the cross border Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

At a meeting of the MOU, north Louth Councillor Edel Corrigan proposed that the cross-border body extend an official invite to the new President Elect of the USA, Joe Biden.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Corrigan said ‘I am pleased to say that my proposal has been accepted and the joint Chairs of the MOU will now write to Mr Biden’s office to congratulate him on his success and extend to him an invitation to meet with representatives of the MOU to inform him of the concerns representatives of the region have in regards to the effects of Brexit.’

.Given the President Elect’s family connection with my own constituency of Dundalk Carlingford and public statements that he has made relating to the effects of Brexit and his concern about any deal that would be contrary to the Good Friday Agreement, I feel that it is very appropriate to do this.’

She explained that the MOU Committee is the first of its kind in Europe, adding: ‘We want to ensure the President-Elect is aware of the appetite of the local community and local authorities for continued regional development on a cross border basis.’

The Memorandum of Understanding is a Strategic Alliance between Newry, Mourne & Down District Councils and Louth County Council which seek to support and promote the economic development and competitiveness of the region.
