ST VINCENT DE PAUL CHRISTMAS APPEAL

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is asking for help to aid those people in our community who want to make Christmas as special for their children and families as everyone else but lack the financial resources to meet the additional costs this time brings. Many are already struggling to pay for food, heating and rent.

If you are in a position to donate or provide vouchers to our local

St. Vincent de Paul, please contact Ann Dunlevy at 087 2778671 or Maura Delaney 086 3361199.

If anyone in the community needs to contact St. Vincent de Paul for assistance, please call 087 9656852.

NEW DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED FOR SHOPFRONT EXHIBITION

Carlingford Heritage Centre recently commissioned a short documentary that won the National Heritage Council awards for Louth. The video takes a look behind the shopfront of P. J. O’Hares in Carlingford.

The video is showing a snapshot of an exhibition hosting over 40 photographs of the different shops around businesses in Carlingford. The exhibition was due to take place in October this year in the Heritage

Centre, however, a new date will be announced in the coming weeks in accordance with government guidelines. Be on the lookout for when the date is announced!

CARLINGFORD/ OMEATH PARISH

Mass Intentions will be celebrated in private in both churches in Carlingford/Omeath on the day as arranged until restrictions have been lifted. New intentions can be booked at the parish office by telephone: 042 9373111 or email candoparish@gmail.com.

Donating to the Parish; Many thanks to those who continue to support our priests’ and parish during these difficult times. Parishioners may leave their envelopes in Carlingford Parochial House and Omeath Parochial House. Online Payments: Standing Order forms, Bank Transfer details and the Diocesan online facility can be accessed from the parish website and are available in both churches. www.carlingford-omeath-parish.ie

Mission Sunday; Special thanks to those who contributed to the work of World Missions Ireland on Mission Sunday last. We would be grateful if any outstanding envelopes could be returned to Carlingford Parochial House or Omeath Parochial House during this week. October is traditionally the month where we support in prayer and donation, the work of our overseas missionaries. Pope Francis while speaking earlier in the pandemic spoke of this year offering us a renewed opportunity to “be missionary towards others - to be of service to others”. Let us continue to be witnesses to the Gospel message of hope and love to those in need.

GLENMORE AC REINVENTING ITSELF IN THE FACE OF PANDEMIC

After hosting a very successful cross country event, the Kearney and McBride cups, in the beautiful surroundings of Bellurgan Park on February 16, Glenmore AC like all other sports clubs in the country found itself in lockdown, due to the covid pandemic that gripped the world.

With their facilities at Bush closed and no training or competitions to attend, the club found itself in the difficult position of trying to keep its members active during these challenging times. But with the never give up attitude of the club, its members got their heads together and organised a series of events and challenges to keep its members active during

lockdown.

With the use of club app’s, a number of different challenges were set up.

Juveniles were pitted against seniors to see who could accumulate the most kms over a period of time. Another challenge saw senior ladies take on senior men, and a quiz ‘how well do you know your club’ was also run over a number of days, all of which got our members active and created a great buzz throughout the club. All challenges were carried out following covid restrictions.

The annual Glenmore 10mile Challenge which is held in June also fell victim to the pandemic. Proceeds of this annual event go to the Maria Goretti foundation, and knowing how important these funds are to the centre, the spirit of the club once again came through. Club members came together and organised the challenge as a virtual 24 hour run, where senior athletes set off in pairs every hour for the 24 hour period. This was something that got a great response and even got runners from other clubs taking part. A fundraising page was set up for donations and over €3,000 was raised.

With the restrictions easing somewhat, some competitions were allowed to go ahead. The club hosted the Louth juvenile track and field championships at Bush in August. It was great to see juveniles having some competition, in what was turning into a very difficult year. Seniors also got their day too when the Louth novice cross country championship got the go ahead in October together with a juvenile programme. Unfortunately that’s as good as it got and with another lockdown in place all competitions were cancelled.

Once again club members got their thinking caps on and put together the November challenge for seniors, juveniles and walkers where each group set targets for kms covered in the month. A fundraising page was set with donations in aid of SOSAD. To add a bit of humour to the event, the senior men were asked to grow a ‘tash’ for the month of November.

Glenmore AC is very conscious of the role it can play in the health and wellbeing of the whole community, and club members are busy making preparations for Bush4mation 2021. Each year this event has given the wider community an opportunity to get active and try something new in the weeks after Christmas. Especially after the year we’ve had, the club feels that Bush4mation is an important programme to offer our community, and will be watching to see what restrictions will be in place and how best it can roll out this programme. More details will be coming in the following weeks.

In spite of all the challenges that face us at the moment, the club will continue to be creative and help all it’s members and wider community stay active in mind and body.
