CHRISTMAS MEMORIES

- By MARGARET RODDY

THIS Christmas promises to be a Christmas like no other and Louth County Museum has launched a ‘Christmas Memories’ project for families over the festive period which will record how we celebrated the festive season during a global pandemic.

Curator Brian Walsh, explains: ‘ This Christmas will be so different to any that we’ve ever had before and we’d like to record people’s memories of both this Christmas and Christmases past.

‘Over the last number of months we’ve been collecting items associated with the pandemic and we want to do something similar for the festive period.’

He says that the Museum is inviting people to interview older relatives and friends about their memories of Christmases past as well as their reflections on Christmas 2020.

‘We’ll add them to the collection where future generations will be able to learn about how we spent Christmas 2020,’ he continued. ‘We’d really appreciate if people could support this project; it’s an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to record what is undoubtedly a historic time in our lives.

The questions people are being asked to put to their older relatives, friends and neighbours are: What Christmas traditions did you have growing up? Do you have any funny stories about Christmas? What types of toys did you get at Christmas? What was your favourite toy and why? What was Christmas dinner like? What is your favourite Christmas memory? Howe will you remember Christmas 2020.

People can email their answers to museum@ louthcoco.ie or send them to Louth County Museum, Jocelyn Street, Dundalk, Co Louth.

‘We plan to put the responses up on our Facebook page in the New Year to give an indication of how we all celebrated Christmas and New Year,’ says Brian.
