DE LA SALLE AWARDS NIGHT WITH A DIFFERENCE!
DE La Salle College recently celebrated the many and varied achievements and successes of its students for the school year 2019-2020, in a very different way than normal!
COVID restrictions and social distancing meant that the annual awards Ceremony, which is one of the highlights of the College’s calendar, could not be held.
But while sticking to COVID-19 regulations and following the HSE safety guidelines, including social distancing, students received their awards.
There were over 170 award, ranging between academic, sports, extra-curricular activities and ethos. As part of the celebrations, a video including all the winners was created and has been shared on social media platforms as well as the school’s website.
‘It is intended that the video be uplifting and inspiring, especially for all our current students who are experiencing so many challenges at the moment,’ said Ms Patricia O’Leary, Principal of De La Salle College. Ms. O’Leary would also like to extend her congratulations and thanks to all the students, their parents and all the staff in the college on their hard work and dedication over the last year.
As always, a vast array of awards were presented. Amongst the recipients were Peter McGuinness, winner of the Brendan McCooey Memorial
Senior Student of the Year Award and Philip Hryhorchuk, winner of the Br. Brendan Collier Memorial Junior Student of the Year Award.
The winner of the Best Leaving Cert results Award for 2020 went to Adam Plunkett and the award for Best Junior Cert results went to Rowan Harmon.
Sporting endeavour was also recognised with Player of the Year awards given for each sport in the school.
One of the most prestigious awards that the college presents, the Lasallian Spirit Award, was won by sixth year student Enoch Elewa. Three students were shortlisted for this award. The finalists were: Enoch Elewa, Jack Cassidy and
Geordan Richardson.
This year also saw the continuation of the George and Patricia Moore Scholarship Awards, inaugurated in 2009 by the late George Moore, past pupil, and kindly continued by his family. Peter McGuinness and Enoch Elewa were the winners of the George Moore and the Patricia Moore Scholarships, respectively.
Two groups received special mention this year: the college’s musicians, “Unstoppable”, who reached the final of the Waltons Music for Schools Competition for the first time in the school’s history; and the Senior and Junior Gael Linn Irish Debating teams who both reached the National Finals, another first for the school.
