Respect for Gerry Smyth in attendance

-

THE sudden death of Gerry Smyth on December 29th evoked widespread sympathy in the town.

That was evident from the exceptionally large numbers that turned out on New Year’s Day to accompany Gerry’s remains from his home in Castle Road to St. Joseph’s Redemptorist Church.

Hundreds walked behind the cortege, while many more lined the route, gathering in the carpark in front of the church where they were thanked by Very Rev. Noel Kehoe, CSs.R., Rector who celebrated the Requiem Mass and told mourners that Gerry who cared for the health of people all his life would have approved of the social distancing observed by everyone.

Gerry who was aged 61, who had been in good health, took ill at his home on St. Stephen’s Day and was removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital where he died three days later.

A son of the late George and Rita Smyth who started the family pharmacy in Seatown Place, George worked in the business all his life.

Highly regarded for his kindness, empathy and cheerful nature to all who frequented the business, he will be greatly missed by the many he encountered over the years.

An avid Dundalk fan, Gerry never missed a game in Oriel Park, and also followed a successful team from his era as a youth, Leeds United.

He had a wide circle of friends, many from his school days, friendships that endured and matured and he will be greatly missed not just be his family and friends but by many others to when he was always available with a kind word or helpful advice.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Mairead (nee Doherty), daughter, Kate, brother, David, sisters, Leone, Mary and Anne and by family and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother, George.
