Trees planted at Grammar school

-

THE progressive and enthusiastic Green Schools Group at Dundalk Grammar School were delighted to take possession of two native Irish sapling trees for planting in the school grounds.

The trees were donated to the group by the Environmental Agency, An Taisce, in recognition of their participation in the National Finals of the Young Environmentalist Awards ( YEA) 2020.

Their entry, led by Group Leader, Ashik Prasad, was named DGS Environmentalists, and their Project was entitled Green Games. They produced an environmental game which was designed to educate those who played it about environmental issues. In 2019, the Group were awarded the YEA Junior Waste Award.

In addition to the trees, the

group was further delighted to receive a cheque from An Taisce for €200, to put towards an environmental facility of their choosing in the school.

The Green Schools Group draws its members from throughout the school, and now numbers 36 students. The group also encompasses the Transition Year Young Social Innovators ( YSI) Team, who are working on their composting and recycling project. This team includes students taking the Grow Your Own Course as part of Transition Year, under the guidance of Roisin Cotter.

The goal of the Green Schools Group is to make their school a truly environmentally-friendly school, to minimise the creation of waste, and what waste there is, to further have it reduced through composting.
