Lockdown golden wedding anniversary
LOCKDOWN celebrations are being planned on Saturday as Gerry and Julia Callan from Knockbridge celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
When couple walked down the aisle of the local church on April 17 1971 they never dreamed that they would celebrate their golden wedding anniversary during a global pandemic.
And while social distancing is still the name of the game, their children Jennifer, Mark, Sabrina and Kenneth, along with their seven grandchildren Oisin, Ruairí, Anna, Ellie, Keeva, Conall and Ronan are determined that the occasion won’t go unmarked.
‘ They have done so much for us that we want to show our appreciation,’ says daughter Jennifer, who lives next door to them. ‘ They can do absolutely nothing to mark the occasion, they can’t even have a party.’
There will, however, be cake, balloons, flowers and lots of waving from a distance.’
Gerry and Julia (nee Duffy) met at a dance and romance blossomed. Julia, who is originally from Marlbog Road, Haggardstown, was working in PJ Carrolls at the time, although she is best remembered for her hair-dressing skills. After they got married, they moved to Gerry’s family home in Knockbridge, where they have been much loved members of the local community.
Gerry worked as an instructor in FAS in Dundalk for many years. A keen musician, he played in several bands and also took part in productions with Dundalk Musical Society and the Castle Players. He is also well known
in greyhound circles as a breeder of prize-winning dogs - a passion he shares with his son Mark.
While the celebrations have been
put on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions, Jennifer says the family will ensure that their Gerry and Julia get a well-deserved treat.
‘ They are a great couple and there’s never been a bad word between them,’ she says.
