De La Salle connects with neighbouring nursing home

-

THIS is De La Salle College’s ninth year taking part in the Young Social Innovators programme.

The latest entry has been a journey with successes and challenges.

‘Every Mind Matters’ aimed to reach out and help the community during COVID-19.

‘Dealgan House, our local nursing home, became the students’ focus,’ explained teacher Louise Johnston.

‘ They quickly recognised while things had changed for them, the residents at Dealgan House had it very different.’

The TY students started off by sending a letter/card with a little chocolate treat for Halloween. From this a connection was made.

‘One of our students now has a pen pal. He informed me recently he sent her a 90th birthday card.’

This group worked with a second-year class who organised hampers and a Christmas concert held at the nursing home with music teacher Ms. Campbell.

‘ These students have worked from home since January. The YSI programme has provided them with the opportunity to continue to participate in their community, using their skills and talents to move their project along,’ Ms Johnston continued.

‘ They have learned the benefits and challenges of teamwork while working in school and remotely. They have put together a video for the residents using past and present photos showing Dundalk and surrounding areas. This will be delivered when we return to school along with updated news and messages.

‘I am looking forward to celebrating YSI week starting 12 April and seeing what the rest of the year brings for this group.’
