Markey opts out of race for Europe

-

Admist all the political announcements last week, it might have been missed both nationally and locally that Louth MEP Colm Markey withdrew his name from a selection convention ahead of the upcoming European elections.

The Togher man has been an MEP since replacing Mairead McGuiness in 2020 when she was appointed EU Commissioner for Financial Services.

He was withdrawing his name from the Midlands-North West constituency selection convention because his view is running two candidates is the best way for the party to secure two seats, Mr Markey said.

Maria Walsh, the party’s other sitting MEP in the constituency, has said she intends to run again.

Last Monday week, former jockey and businesswoman Nina Carberry confirmed her intention to run for Fine Gael in Midlands-North West.

Mr Markey said he intends to remain in politics and contest other future elections and while there is no confirmation anywhere as yet, speculation centres on him being included on the party’s ticket for the upcoming General Election, especially following Fergus O’Dowd’s decision not to seek re-election.

“My focus will return to my home county of Louth and in particular Drogheda which has faced particular challenges in recent months and years, I want to play a central role in tackling these issues and working closely with Fergus O’Dowd TD to carry on work he has completed over the last 22 years,” he said.

“I am immensely proud of the work I have achieved in the last three years as an MEP since I took on the role after Mairead McGuinness became an

EU Commissioner. In that time, I have worked hard for all my constituents on many matters including agricultural, energy, transport, fisheries, environmental and social issues.

“I would like to thank my family, supporters, team both in Ireland and Brussels, as well as the people of Midlands North-West whom I have been proud to serve.

“I also wish to thank Commissioner Mairead McGuinness and my fellow MEPs for their help and support and I want to wish our new leader Simon Harris every success in his new role.”
