Man(43) stole Garda torch

-

A man who stole a €100 Garda issue torch has been remanded on continuing bail for a probation report.

David Murphy (43), Simon Community, Barrack Street, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the offence which occurred at Linenhall Street, and to public order charges stemming from two other incidents.

The court heard that on November 12, 2023, while gardaí were assisting paramedics at night, one of the officers placed a torch on the ground to illuminate the scene.

When he returned it was gone. The defendant was in the vicinity. The torch was found on him. He made admissions.

Evidence was also given that at 10.35am on December 18, 2023, gardaí on beat patrol encountered Mr Murphy sitting on the ground at Tesco Extra. There was a smell of drink from him, and his speech was slurred.

On being arrested he started to shout profanities and resisted one of the officers. He had to be restrained.

Gardaí on patrol saw the accused stumbling onto the road at Avenue Road at 4.04pm on November 26 last.

He was arrested and while being escorted to a garda vehicle became insulting towards the guards.

There were 24 previous convictions, one for public order and none for theft.

Mr Murphy’s solicitor said that he had battled an alcohol addiction for most of his life. He had been homeless until recently staying with a friend.

The defendant required and wanted help. He had stopped drinking on Easter Sunday. He was asking the court for a chance.

Judge Coggans said she saw that alcohol was a problem, but these issues were impacting on people present at the time.

The case was adjourned to July 10 for a probation report.
