Open day gets to the heart of the matter!
April 2004
The benefits of regular exercise are highlighted at an open day at the Louth County Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit.
A fully equipped cardiac studio combined with a smoking cessation service, cardio-vascular research department, dietetics and diabetics day service/department have been set up in the unit.
In an era where childhood obesity is a concern and heart disease confirmed as the biggest killer in Ireland, the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit is a vital service for patients at risk of developing heart complaints or recovering from treatment for a heart condition.
Organised by Rose Byrne, Health Promotion Officer at the hospital, the day provides an opportunity for people to witness the services available.
Patricia Maguire, the unit’s Coordinator, explains that patients being treated at the Louth are referred to the service to rebuild their health.
‘People generally come to the unit three times a week for hourly sessions which include a full, supervised cardio-vascular work-out designed to suit their own needs.
‘ The progress that people make between their first day here and the end of an eight-week programme is fantastic,’ Patricia continues.
‘ Their health is carefully monitored throughout and bit by bit they are able to do more strenuous exercise as the weeks progress.’
She adds that education sessions are held during the programme.
‘ These sessions are an excellent opportunity for patients to ask questions about their treatment, medication and their health.
Patricia reveals that a surprisingly large number of people with heart conditions do not take prescribed medication properly, with some not taking it at all.
The Hospital Pharmacist will attend an education session to explain the medications, and why they are prescribed.
