Faughart mark return by winning
Bellurgan United’s Daniel Kerr and Conor Walsh of Trim Celtic during Friday night’s Premier Division fixture at Flynn Park.
THE weather continued to upset fixtures in the Clancy Cup, the opening competition in the Dundalk Summer League, with more games postponed.
The games between Quay Celtic and Square United and Carlingford Celtic and Bellurgan United games were called off due to unplayable pitches.
Also, the tie between Shamrocks and Rampart Celtic was switched to the all-weather pitch at Muirhevnamor.
The league management have decided to re-arrange matches before starting the league, which is due to kick-off on the week beginning April 22.
WIN ON RETURN
Faughart Rovers marked a welcome return to the league after an absence of some years with an away win in Carrick.
Despite being a goal behind at half-time, they fought back to run out 3-2 victors in a very evenly-contested match between the two First Division teams.
The away team’s goalscorers were Emmanuel Keenan, Andy Faicus and Cathal Manning.
Stephen O’Rourke opened the scoring for Carrick with Killian Garland their other scorer.
SWITCHED
Shamrocks’ first outing of the season had to be played at the Muirhevnamor due to a waterlogged home venue.
The Hoops made themselves at home, coming out 6-0 winners.
After 13 minutes, Barry O’Hare completed a good move by sweeping home the first of his brace of goals.
On 28 minutes, his tap-in made it 2-0. A diving, close range header by Ben Mulholland five minutes later sent the Fatima side in at half-time three goals to the good.
Rampart improved in the second half, mostly through the efforts of Seán Bailey in midfield and attack. After surviving a host of near misses by a wasteful Shamrocks forward line, they conceded a fourth goal from a Robbie Mackin lob in the 80th minute.
Deane Browne, who also grabbed a brace, converted a penalty to complete the 6-0 rout.
