Injured his girlfriend with Quad bike crash

A woman out celebratin­g her 21st birthday was struck into by her boyfriend on a quad bike, the district court has heard.

Jamie Murphy (22), Rathcor, Riverstown, was summonsed for dangerous driving, no insurance and failing to remain at the scene of an accident at Dundalk Street, Carlingfor­d, on May 11, 2023.

He was fined €300 on the no insurance matter and avoided a disqualifi­cation.

Judge McKiernan reduced the dangerous driving summons to careless driving and took it into considerat­ion.

Gardaí withdrew the hit and run summons.

Court presenter Sgt Letitia McConnell said the injured party had been drinking in Juniors Bar celebratin­g her 21st birthday.

She came out of the pub and walked in front of her boyfriend who was on a scrambler. A collision occurred and she suffered a broken leg.

Mr Murphy was upset by what happened and left the scene. He subsequent­ly identified himself. His girlfriend was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

Solicitor Ciarán Hughes said that his client and the young lady have been together a long time. She had made a statement of no complaint.

The investigat­ing garda had confirmed to him that Mr Murphy did not have to yield on this occasion.

He was an engineer, earning €700 per week.
