CHARLIE LOVED HIS MUSIC

- LIAM HOWARD

great sense of humour, was also a keen gardener and worked on many local gardens following his retirement from Galtee. sound system was up to date. He was a great favourite and played for lots of local weddings, socials, dances and parties.

Charlie’s last band was with his nephew Brendan Cahill, they played all over Munster at many events, and they recorded a fabulous CD, thousands of copies have been sold ... to this day people still request a copy, something which brings joy to Joan and his family, to think his memory still lives on.

He was a member of the 13th Infantry Battalion FCA in Kilbehenny for many years with whom he won a Munster individual shooting competition - a great personal achievement for Charlie as he only had one eye, having lost his other eye as a young man following an accident.

Loved by all who knew him, Charlie Sweeney is a name that many people still recognise to this day and Joan and his family still love to hear fond stories of Charlie, a man of many talents and a great man to play the last post on his trumpet whenever requested.

May his memory live on through his family and music for many years to come.

A verse from one of his favourite songs that he was very well known for and one he sang for a group of tourists in Hawaii in 1999 where he travelled to with his family, for his son JJ’s wedding:

When our work here is done

And our life’s crown is won

And our troubles and trials are o’er

All our sorrow will end, and our voices will

blend,

In a land where we never grow old . . . .
