SPORTING SUCCESS at CBS Mitchelstown

-

GAELIC FOOTBALL

There are five football teams in the school ranging from U14 to U19, who represent the school proudly. Last year, our U16½ team reached the Munster final, losing out to Killorglin in the decider. A similar lot befell the senior footballers, losing a thrilling Munster final to the Abbey (Tipperary).

HURLING

We have been very proud with the success of our under-age hurlers in recent years. Last year the senior hurlers were unbeaten all year as they claimed the Munster and All-Ireland titles following some titanic battles in the Munster knock-out stages and the All-Ireland semi-final in particular.

The benefits of sport in developing resilience and determination are clear to be seen on days like these.

Our U-16 hurlers reached the Cork Colleges final but lost in the decider to Coláiste Choilm (Ballincollig). This strong hurling tradition supports five teams in the school ranging from U14 to U19, welcoming pupils from all year groups.

At Mitchelstown CBS however, we are more than just a GAA School, we have great participation in a range of other sports including:

SOCCER

With the school fielding senior and junior teams, as well as an annual staff vs. students football match which is always popular. This year the U15 side reached the County semi-final in their competition, a huge highlight for the group and testament to the work done in both club and school.

RUGBY

The school continues to participate and perform very well in Munster developing schools blitz competitions. This was rewarded with an invitation to the U15 side to play in the half-time game at the U20 international between Ireland and France at Musgrave Park earlier this year, a fantastic occasion for players and coaches alike. Last year the U15 boys played in the first 15-a-side game for the school, against Davis College Mallow. Munster players Josh and Fineen Wycherley were on hand to mark the occasion.

BASKETBALL

Last year was the second for the Basketball Club, driven by the interest shown by students in this sport. Both the 1st and 2nd year groups performed admirably in their competitions, each reaching the knock-out stages.

GOLF TEAM

The school annually fields a Junior golf team and Senior golf team for Munster school events.

ATHLETICS

This year the school has set up an athletics club, with after-school training open to all interested students.

Students also participate in Swimming, Athletics, Badminton, Volleyball, Rounders, Martial arts, Uni-hoc, Racquetball, Handball, Squash, Tag Rugby and

Gymnastics as part of P.E. classes.

Participation and enjoyment are the focus with morning and breaktime basketball and football and with lunchtime handball and racquetball in the nearby alley and volleyball in the school hall.
