Rain defeats golf

-

This past week we have experienced exceptionally heavy rain on the back of an already high water table, and our leisure activities have taken a hammering. The Funcheon was unable to cope with the level of precipitation and overflowed onto one or two of our fairways. Very few (if any) courses would have coped with such a deluge. As with most other courses, we remained closed for several days. We have now moved to our usual 15-hole winter course.

On the bright side however, lack of golfing has triggered a desire to start up clubhouse activities and a series of WhatsApp messages generated some enthusiasm for our cosy 45 card game on Sunday evening. They say it’s an ill wind…

MEN’S CLUB NEWS

The clubhouse will be warm and welcoming for the first of the long winter evenings after the clocks go back. LADIES NOTES

On Tuesday 17th, due to Storm Babet, the ladies of the Beanóirí were forced to forgo golf and instead had tea and treats supplied by Catherine, in the clubhouse. Each Tuesday, the Beanóirí play a scramble of 12 holes, weather permitting. They meet at 10.15am for the draw, so ladies, please put your name on the timesheet if you wish to join in.

Next week's competition is a 15-hole champagne scramble sponsored by Dennehy Builders. It can be played from Friday, October 27th to Wednesday, November 1st.

SEANÓIRÍ

We had no golf last week due to the adverse weather conditions. With luck, we may be able to venture out this week but Met Eireann might have another opinion. Please be reminded that we will have our AGM and Christmas dinner on Thursday, 7th December.

45 CARDS

That time of year has come around again when we seek to make friends around the card table in the cosy confines of our clubhouse on Sunday evenings. Clem Leonard has kindly set up a WhatsApp group known as “Six for Cards” to keep all would-be fortune makers abreast of events - if you would like to be included, please text Clem on 086-8912769. We look forward to a successful season of cards and craic for this year again.

INTERESTED IN TAKING UP GOLF?

Although we are now well advanced into our golfing year, we are keen to hear from anyone interested in taking up the sport. We regard golf as a sport for all ages and all abilities. We pride ourselves as a friendly, warm, welcoming club with a superb 18-hole parkland course at our disposal. We regard golf as an all-year sport even though winter imposes some limitations on our activity with shorter daylight hours.
