MESSAGE FROM GERRY CLANCY

Gerry is a volunteer with Refugee Support, a small NGO that provides vital food and other essential services to refugees through its dignity centre in Cyprus.

Gerry has just returned after spending 7 weeks in Cyprus. He says “the people coming to our door are lost, hungry and destitute, with nothing more than the clothes on their back . We concentrate on those who are without any government help. We provide a free weekly shop, using a points system. Currently we look after individuals and families from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and in recent weeks increasing numbers of Palestinians.

“To maintain these services we need to raise around €18,000 a month. Refugee Support relies solely on public donations. Volunteers do not get paid and are responsible for all their own costs.

“I have relied on the kindness and generosity of the people in this community over the past 5 years, fundraising for Refugee Support. In my time on the ground in refugee camps and centres across Greece and Cyprus, I have witnessed first-hand the value of your donation in terms of providing vital food, but also giving hope to some of the most marginalised people in this world. Without your help people would go hungry. I am asking for your support once again, at a time when the need for kindness and compassion in the world is greater than ever.

“It was Pope Francis who said: “we are all born to help each other, no matter how difficult it is. Life is good when you are happy, but much better when others are happy because of you”.

I will be fundraising outside Centra Kilfinane commencing December 4th and outside SuperValu, Kilmallock the following week, commencing December 11th. Please come out and support this worthy cause.

“We will have a draw for a hamper for all those who donate. The draw will take place on December 20th. Thank you for your continuing and amazing support - Gerry Clancy RSE Ambassador.”
