WATERFORD LEAGUE

-

What a Saturday for the three clubs from up the west, Ballyduff Rovers, Cappoquin/Railway and Lismore, as all three won their respective league games in the Waterford and District League. Pride of place this week goes to Ballyduff Rovers who won their first league game on Saturday last since they entered the Waterford and District League.

Ballyduff 5 Kilmacow 1

Playing at home Ballyuff defeated Kilmacow to record their first win on the field of play. A few weeks ago Ballyduff were awarded three points when the Villa were unable to fulfil their fixture in Ballyduff, so Saturday last saw the village team win their first league game.

Kilmacow took an early lead after only a few minutes when a corner kick awarded to them was badly dealt with by the home defence and caused a scramble, with the ball entering the net. This did not deter Ballyduff and they hit back within minutes when Tireoghain Flynn pulled the ball back for Michael McCormack to finish to the net – 1-1.

Ten minutes later, Marc Callanan got on the end of a Ballyduff corner kick to score and give the home team the lead and this was the score at half-time, 2-1.

Five minutes into the second half, Tireoghain Flynn scored to give the home team a two goal lead and then he scored again ten minutes later for the fourth goal and a three goal advantage.

Credit Kilmacow, they kept attacking and had a few chances that they failed to convert and in injury time, Ballyduff completed the scoring when Aidan O’Brien scored with a free kick and at the final whistle, Ballyduff had the three points - a result they richly deserved on the day.

We congratulate the club on this, their first victory and wish them the very best for the rest of the season.

Ballyduff Rovers will be at home to Carrick

Utd on Saturday, 6th January, 2024 in Division 3A with a 2pm start.

Lismore 4 Johnville 2

Lismore had Johnville as visitors to the Castle Farm Ground on Saturday afternoon last in Division 2B and at the final whistle, secured the three points.

Lismore opened the scoring when David Smith found the net. Finbarr Reaney added a second to give the home team a two goal lead. The visitors pulled a goal back, but Paddy Foley scored before the break to leave Lismore leading 3-1 at half-time.

Johnville scored shortly after the restart to cut the deficit to the minimum and were then awarded a penalty, which they missed. With five minutes remaining, David Smith scored to restore the two goal advantage and at the final whistle, Lismore had the three points, recording a 4-2 victory.

A good win and result for the cathedral town club and they will be at home again on Saturday, 6th January in Division 2B to St Pauls with a 2pm start.

The Villa 2 Cappoquin/Railway 4

The third and final team from up west, Cappoquin/Railway, travelled to Waterford to play the Villa in Division 3A on Saturday evening under lights and came away with three points following a 2-4 result.

Goals from Danny Coughlan and Kealen Foley, versus a goal from the home team, gave the visitors the lead at half time 1-2.

In the second half Justin Foley and Cathal Carey both scored, while the Villa could only find the net on one occasion and at the final whistle, Cappoquin/Railway were winners, claiming the three points. A great result here and Cappoquin/ Railway’s next game in 3A is a local derby when they have home advantage on Friday, 5th January next against near neighbours Ballinroad, with a 7pm kick-off.
